Field notes begin with a question that doesn't get asked enough: what do you actually see when you look at a wild animal? Not the silhouette on a tourist brochure, not the watercolour in a gift shop – the specific creature in front of you, with its weight and smell and particular way of holding its head in the heat of the day. Whether you're a sketcher carrying a field journal, a photographer studying form before you raise the camera, or simply a traveller trying to look more carefully, understanding what a species does is the foundation of understanding what it is. These field notes are written for that kind of attention.

What You're Looking At

Kenya's wildlife is genuinely diverse – around 25,000 species of animals by broad count, with roughly 100 species of large mammals alone. For the purposes of safari animal drawings and field observation, the species that reward close study most are the ones with complex social lives and legible body language: African elephant (Loxodonta africana), lion (Panthera leo), leopard (Panthera pardus), plains zebra (Equus quagga), Maasai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi), African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), and cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). Behaviour and Ecology

The reason most safari animal drawings fail to convince – even technically accomplished ones – is that they freeze an animal in a generic pose. A lion standing alert. A giraffe with neck extended. These are the poses of zoo observation, not wild behaviour.

In the field, lions spend the majority of daylight hours horizontal. A pride in the Mara in the dry season might not shift position for six or seven hours. What changes is the subtle language of the group: a female raising her chin to scent-check the wind, cubs repositioning around a sleeping male, a subordinate male watching a dominant one with careful lateral eyes. The value in watching – and in drawing from that watching – is learning to read those micro-behaviours.

Elephants are even richer. A family group moving through acacia scrub communicates constantly through rumbles below human hearing, through touch, through coordinated direction changes that happen with no visible signal to the human observer. Cheetah behaviour is structured around the hunt, and the hunt is structured around light and temperature. They are almost exclusively diurnal hunters, most active in the first two hours after sunrise and again in the late afternoon. A cheetah sitting upright on a termite mound at 6:30 in the morning is not posing for you – it is scanning for Thomson's gazelle at distances of up to a kilometre. That posture has a function, and understanding the function changes how you draw or photograph it.

Spotted hyenas, often dismissed as scavengers, are in fact highly organised cooperative hunters with a matriarchal clan structure. Clan territories in the Mara can cover 40 to 80 square kilometres, and boundary patrols happen largely at night. Where to See Them in Kenya

Maasai Mara National Reserve and surrounding conservancies. The Mara ecosystem remains the most reliably productive large-mammal habitat in Kenya. Lion density in the reserve is among the highest in Africa; the Mara Lion Project has tracked individual prides here for years and provides population data that Kenya Wildlife Service draws on for management decisions. The conservancies bordering the reserve – Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Naboisho, Ol Kinyei among others – offer lower vehicle density than the main reserve and often better sightings of leopard and cheetah.

Leopard density in the rocky luggas (seasonal watercourses) of the northern conservancies is particularly high. Guides who know specific territories will often be able to predict where an individual female is likely to be at a given time of day, based on her denning location and recent movement patterns.

Amboseli National Park. For elephants, Amboseli is the most studied population in Africa. The Amboseli Elephant Research Project, running since 1972, has documented the life histories of every individual in the population. Samburu National Reserve. Samburu's semi-arid habitat supports species not found further south: Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi, Endangered), reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata), Beisa oryx, and gerenuk. The light here is different from the Mara – harder, more directional, the vegetation sparser and more graphic. Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Laikipia. Ol Pejeta carries the highest density of black rhino in East Africa and is home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth. The conservancy's lion and cheetah populations are well habituated to vehicles. Tsavo East and West. Kenya's largest protected area by combined size. Elephant populations here are large and the landscape is vast – sightings require more patience, but the red-dust elephants of Tsavo, stained by the laterite soil, are visually unlike any other population. Buffalo herds can reach into the thousands in the dry season.

Where to See Them in East and Southern Africa

Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem shares the Mara's migratory wildebeest population and offers comparable lion and cheetah sightings, with the advantage of far larger protected area and, in some sectors, lower vehicle pressure. The Ndutu area in the southern Serengeti is particularly important for cheetah and wild dog during the calving season (roughly January to March).

South Africa's Kruger National Park has the most accessible infrastructure and the most predictable leopard sightings in Africa, particularly along the Sabie and Sand rivers. The private reserves on Kruger's western boundary – Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Thornybush – have leopard populations so habituated to vehicles that you can watch a female feeding on a kill in a tree at close range without disturbing her.

When to See Them

Dry season (June to October) is the conventional answer, and it's correct for most species. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate around permanent water, and the grass drops to a height that allows clear sightlines. In the Mara, this period coincides with the wildebeest migration, which brings the full predator cast – lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, wild dog – into heightened activity.

January to March is underrated. The short rains (October to November) have passed, the landscape is green, newborn animals are abundant, and vehicle numbers are lower than in peak season. Cheetah and wild dog are often easier to observe when they're hunting in open, short-grass habitat.

Time of day matters as much as month. The first 90 minutes after sunrise and the last 90 minutes before sunset are when most predators are active and when the light is most useful for both observation and photography. Midday sightings of lions or leopards are possible but the animals will typically be deep in shade and largely motionless.

Conservation Status and Threats

The numbers are not comfortable reading. Kenya's lion population is estimated at somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 individuals by Kenya Wildlife Service figures, down from perhaps 30,000 across sub-Saharan Africa at mid-century. The IUCN lists the species as Vulnerable; some regional subpopulations are effectively in freefall.

Cheetah are rarer still. The Cheetah Conservation Fund estimates fewer than 7,000 remain in the wild globally, with Kenya holding a meaningful proportion of East Africa's total. Habitat fragmentation is the primary driver of decline – cheetah require large territories and are sensitive to human disturbance during denning.

Elephant populations present a more mixed picture. The Amboseli population has recovered significantly since the ivory poaching crisis of the 1970s and 1980s, partly due to community conservancy models and Kenya's 1989 ivory ban. But Kenya Wildlife Service reports ongoing human-wildlife conflict at the boundaries of protected areas, particularly as drought years compress elephant movement and push animals into agricultural land. The 2022 drought was severe across Amboseli and Tsavo; KWS documented significant elephant mortality.

Overcrowding in the Maasai Mara is a real and growing problem. During peak migration season, vehicle numbers around major river crossings can reach levels that demonstrably alter predator behaviour – lions abandoning hunts, cheetah failing to settle cubs in areas of high vehicle pressure. The conservancies adjacent to the reserve operate under stricter vehicle limits, which is one reason they often produce better sightings.

How to Watch Responsibly

The most important rule is also the simplest: let the animal's behaviour tell you when you're too close. If a cheetah stops scanning and starts watching your vehicle, you are affecting its hunt. If a lion cub retreats toward its mother as you approach, you are too close. A good guide will read these signals before you do – and the best guides will explain what they're seeing.

Specific practices worth holding to:

  • Stay in the vehicle at all times in unfenced reserves. This is a safety rule, not a bureaucratic one.
  • No flash photography. Ever. This is particularly important around denning predators and nocturnal species on night drives.
  • Resist the pressure to be the closest vehicle. In a competitive viewing situation with multiple vehicles, the one that holds back often gets the best sightings when the others leave.
  • Ask your guide about the individual animal's history. Knowing that a particular leopard female has cubs nearby, or that a cheetah coalition has been stressed by vehicle pressure that week, changes how you approach the sighting.
  • Silence in the vehicle matters. Loud conversation at a sighting is not just poor etiquette – it carries further than you think and affects animal behaviour.

Photography Notes

The light in the Mara and Amboseli is directional and golden in the first and last hours of the day. This is when animal behaviour is most active and when the quality of light most rewards patience. A 400mm or 500mm telephoto is the standard tool for large predators; a 70–200mm covers giraffe, elephant, and buffalo at closer range.

A hyena returning to a den at dawn, a giraffe drinking (the splayed-leg posture is biomechanically extraordinary and almost never drawn accurately), a young elephant learning to use its trunk – these are the moments that carry real information about what these animals are.

Behavioural moments worth waiting for: a lion greeting ritual when the pride reunites after a separation; a cheetah coalition's coordinated stalk; an elephant matriarch's response to the scent of a dead elephant's bones. These are not rare in the sense of being unpredictable – they are predictable if you understand the behaviour – but they require time in the field rather than a drive-by approach.

Stories from the Field

On a morning in Olare Motorogi, we watched a female cheetah make three separate attempts to hunt Thomson's gazelle over the course of two hours. She failed each time – twice because the gazelle spotted her approach, once because a tourist vehicle cut across her line of approach without the driver apparently noticing what was happening. On the fourth attempt, in the last light before we needed to return to camp, she made a clean kill at perhaps 300 metres distance, moving from a standstill to full sprint in a few seconds. The whole sequence was over in under a minute. What the photographs showed afterward – the dust, the blur of speed, the moment of contact – was almost unreadable. What stayed was the memory of watching her rest her chin on the gazelle's flank afterward, sides heaving, and the specific quality of the silence in the vehicle.

In Amboseli, on a still morning with Kilimanjaro clear above the marsh, we stopped to watch a family group of perhaps 12 elephants working through a stand of fever trees. The matriarch was old enough to have prominent temporal gland secretions running down her cheeks – a sign of musth-equivalent stress in females, or sometimes of social excitement. She paused for perhaps three minutes at the edge of the tree line, facing east, doing nothing visible. Then the whole family turned and followed her into the open. Whatever she had read in that pause, we had no access to it.

At Ol Pejeta, a young male lion – three years old, mane barely started, recently separated from his natal pride – spent an afternoon sitting on a termite mound at the edge of a lugga, watching a herd of buffalo with an expression that managed to convey both intense focus and total inexperience. He never made a move toward them. The buffalo knew he was there and were watching him with the particular collective attention of a species that has killed more lions than most people realise. It was a study in two kinds of uncertainty.

Are African safari animals dangerous to photograph from a vehicle? In a properly run game drive vehicle, the risk is low – animals generally treat the vehicle as a single entity rather than identifying individual humans within it. What's the difference between a national park and a conservancy in Kenya? National parks are state-managed by Kenya Wildlife Service and open to all visitors.
